Be Like Brit and Regis College Support the Grand Goave Community in Haiti By Providing Quality Care and Mentorship

At our most recent Health eVillages Board meeting in December, we were honored to host our partners working in Haiti: Cherylann Gengel, Co-Founder of Be Like Brit (BLB) and Regis College faculty members Lisa Krikorian and Sheryl Kelleher.  Board members and staff were so excited to learn more about the founding of the Be Like Brit organization and the work of the Regis College nursing faculty in Haiti.

Be Like Brit was founded in honor of Britney Gengel, daughter of Cherylann, who was killed while on a mission trip in Haiti by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010.  Brit was a compassionate, fearless 19-year-old whose dream was to start an orphanage in Haiti to help all children in need.  After she died, her parents decided to make her dream a reality and started construction on “Brit’s Home,” a 19,000-square-foot earthquake-proof, non-adoptive orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti.  Since the opening of the orphanage ten years ago, there are now 33 girls and 33 boys residing and thriving at Brit’s Home. Thirty-three signifies the number of days Brit was missing in the rubble after the earthquake.

While Regis College has been one of Health eVillages’ original partners since its launch in 2011, the work with Be Like Brit commenced in October 2018 with the following goals: (1) provide mentorship for the BLB staff nurses and better address the children’s developmental needs; (2) support the use of BLB’s healthcare clinic to provide quality care to the underserved Grand Goave community surrounding BLB, with a special focus on women and children; (3) utilize Health eVillages tablets to assess, measure and evaluate how the tablets can be used to enhance nursing practice and community education; and (4) track access to healthcare and inform how to improve health outcomes for BLB clinic patients.

We are extremely grateful for our continued partnership with Be Like Brit and Regis College, and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the impact of our tablets and technology on both organizations as a whole.  We are excited to see what else this year has in store!
