Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma have been two of the largest storms in U.S. history. Now that these monster storms have passed, how do you start healing? It takes more than emergency management or government or churches or business. It takes the whole community together. At Health eVillages, we like to call it –“healing the villages.”
It will also take time to recover. It may still be days or weeks before floodwaters fully recede in some areas and residents can even get to their homes to assess the damage. The challenges are tremendous for any family. For vulnerable older adults, it can be far more difficult — securing food, clean water and medications, coordinating paperwork, finding temporary housing or performing or scheduling repairs, getting affordable transportation to family members out-of-state, and sometimes even needing more complex medical assistance or social services.
Health eVillages has partnered with Tivity Health, Silver Sneakers and the Tramuto Foundation to launch the Tivity Health Relief Fund to identify gaps in services and to support organizations who are helping older adults impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana as well as Hurricane Irma in Florida. All proceeds raised will help bring services and programs to people age 65 and older.
Tivity Health will match the first $50,000 donated to the fund. Help us to meet our goal of $250,000 in relief funds! All donations are fully tax-deductible.
When I see the news coverage of older people being helped out of their homes in waist-high water watching their cars float away, I wonder where they will go when the shelters close? Do they have enough medications? Do they have transportation to out-of-state family? And, when they do return – will they find a reputable contractor? Can they afford repairs? How will they get to the services they need? Not everyone can just pull up carpet and drywall and replace. Not everyone can just buy a new car or a new wardrobe. Not everyone can get online and sort through government, insurance and other assistance applications and forms. Not everyone can just start over.
Health eVillages is proud to partner with the co-sponsors of the Tivity Health Relief Fund to help bridge the gaps in assistance that will make a difference in the lives of older adults and help Heal the Villages after the storm.
