Young African Generation Holds Healthcare in Their Hands

Matt addresses the village upon arrival to Acuma, Uganda

I write tonight from a small hut in rural central Uganda!

Today we traveled from Kampala to Soroti, Uganda, where we picked up Joseph, our Health eVillages sponsor for Angels of Hope’s second clinic.

Joseph brought us out to his small village, where they have an ever-growing health center sponsored by Angels of Hope. We were greeted by more than 300 villagers who crowded around the car with smiles and words of welcome!

After a formal ceremony marking our arrival to the village, which included speeches by the village elders and a traditional dance, we met with the health center committee to discuss tomorrow’s training.  An initial demonstration of the device got the people of the village very excited, and they truly seemed to realize the wealth of knowledge that was in their hands.  Although many of them have very little experience with mobile electronic devices, the younger generation all have cell phones and their Head Medical Officer (a nurse practitioner) is only in his late twenties.

Tomorrow will be the real test of our ability to offer this device in rural communities, a very exciting moment!  These are the health centers with the most need as they have very little access to any sort of medical reference materials.  Health eVillages at its finest!

More to come tomorrow!
